How Long Do Car Headlights Last?

Regardless of all the impressive safety features offered by automakers like Nissan, the best way to stay safe on the road is to be able to see other cars and for other cars to see you. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your headlights are working properly and to replace them when they burn out. It’s possible that a person could own a vehicle for many years without ever needing to replace a headlight, but a lot of people still ask us, ‘How long do car headlights last?’ We asked out service team, and the answer depends on a few factors. Let’s take a look.

Lifespan of a Car’s Headlights

There is no hard and fast answer to how long a car’s headlights will last. It depends on the equipment being used on how often it’s being used. Halogen headlights are arguably the most common type on the road and they have an average lifespan of 14 months of use. High-intensity headlights have an average of 23 months, and LED headlights can last for 42 months.

Remember, this is elapsed time that only counts when the lights are turned on. If a person only uses their headlights a few hours per week, it will take a long time to reach any of these average limits.

When Should Headlights Be Replaced?

Unless something catastrophic happens, it’s rare for a headlight to just go dark. It’s more likely that it will start to get dimmer over time. As soon as you notice the headlights aren’t as bright as they used to be, it’s time to replace them. Don’t risk being without the necessary light to drive at night.

Also, sometimes, the lens housing around the lights can make them seem duller than normal. Cleaning the lenses with an appropriate agent could be the answer you’re looking for.

Can You Upgrade Halogen Headlights to LED?

More and more newer vehicles are using LED headlights for several reasons, including that they last longer. Some car owners like the look of LED headlights better and want to upgrade their old halogen bulbs. This is possible, but a halogen-to-LED conversion kit is often required. If someone is particularly handly with tools, they may be able to do this themselves.
